Nelson County awards tipping-floor contract; transfer station will close temporarily during work

Nelson County officials told the board that Anglers LLC of Leesburg, Virginia, has been awarded the contract to replace the tipping floor at the county transfer station, and that work will begin after required local permits and site preparation are complete. County Administrator said the contractor is expected to be on site daily from about 6:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. during the project. During the closure, county staff advised residents and commercial customers to continue bringing waste to the transfer station until the county announces an official closure date. The county has arranged for Amherst to accept Nelson’s waste temporarily, but only after Nelson County announces it is closed; officials warned some residents mistakenly went to Amherst before a closure was declared.
The administrator also said the county will barricade public access to the transfer area during construction but will maintain access to the animal shelter. County maintenance and transfer-station staff will use the closure period to rehabilitate the scale house. A more definitive project timeline and daily impacts will be published once permits are issued.
