Norwalk imposes temporary moratorium on new honorary street-name applications

The Norwalk Common Council voted April 14 to place a temporary moratorium on accepting and processing new applications for honorary and historic street naming while the Ordinance Committee updates the city’s rules.
Sponsors said a rise in such requests and variability in procedures prompted the pause so staff and elected officials can draft clear, consistent criteria. The resolution cites concerns about administrative consistency, public navigation and emergency response, and the need to align street-naming rules with other naming conventions for city property.
City staff told council the committee will hold discussions, seek public comment and return with revised ordinance language; staff projected the moratorium could be lifted once the ordinance is adopted and suggested the work could be completed by year end. The moratorium, as framed in the resolution, will not affect applications already filed.
The council approved the moratorium unanimously. Ordinance Committee members asked for broad participation and said residents and council members may attend committee discussions to provide input.
