Smithfield’s School Committee voted March 5 to approve a drafted liaison framework intended to standardize communication between an appointed school committee liaison and a corresponding town‑council designee.
Staff said the draft, informed by the town manager’s input, is intended to improve information flow and clarify roles and responsibilities while avoiding any change to existing authority. “We’re calling it a framework... a place to start,” the staff presenter said, noting the framework is not intended to allow liaisons to negotiate contracts or exercise governing authority.
Under the draft, the committee and town council would each appoint a liaison who would report back to their governing body; the framework would be posted and could be adjusted after initial implementation. Committee members asked for language clarifying that the framework does not replace standing joint meetings and agreed to forward the draft to the town council for review.
The motion to approve the framework was made, seconded, and carried by voice vote. Staff will transmit the approved draft to the town council and return with any recommended edits after the town’s review.
