Springfield Environmental Commission honors student winners of 'save energy' poster contest

Members of the Springfield Environmental Commission presented awards to student winners of the township’s annual poster contest during the June 11 committee meeting.
Hortens Theas introduced the 2025 theme, “For a better tomorrow, save energy today,” and said the commission received several hundred submissions from four of the five township schools. The commission thanked the Board of Education, the Department of Public Works and the township clerk’s office for their assistance in running the contest and coordinating school participation.
Winners from Edward Walton, James Caldwell, Sand Meer and Jonathan Dayton schools were called forward to receive certificates and emergency hand-crank flashlights. Commission members said selecting winners was difficult because many entries showed creativity and strong alignment with the contest theme.
The commission encouraged residents to take simple energy-saving steps—turn off unused lights and electronics, install timers or sensors on outdoor lighting and set efficient thermostats—to reduce utility bills and greenhouse-gas emissions. The committee applauded the students and thanked teachers, parents and participating departments.
