Parent tells Edison board 504 accommodations were delayed after son's concussion, asks for inquiry

The parent said their child missed roughly 80 days of school after a concussion sustained during a gym scrimmage and experienced swelling, headaches and nausea. They alleged a JP Stevens 504 coordinator (named in the public comment) told the family the student must complete missed work before a vacation and that the coordinator was late to a virtual 504 meeting. The parent said administrators later granted the accommodations only after they escalated the matter to district administrators, and they requested a board inquiry into whether the coordinator’s conduct reflected incompetence or bias.
A board member called for district administrators (identified in the transcript) to connect with the parent and meet to review the situation. The parent asked the board that, if their child needs 504 accommodations next year, the district not assign the same coordinator.
The board did not take further public action on this grievance during the caucus; the administration was asked to follow up directly with the family.
