Eagle Scout candidate outlines plan to restore WWII memorial; council offers support

Jason 'JP' O'Neal of Troop 83 presented his Eagle Scout project to the Somerville Borough Council on March 2: a restorative effort to make the World War II memorial adjacent to the YMCA more visible and maintained.
O'Neal described plans to pressure wash the memorial stone, remove oxidation from the plaque, repair and repaint the flagpole and replace the rope and pulley, install wooden plank benches along the path, add perennial plantings and mulch, and fit a solar-powered flag light so the flag is illuminated at night. He said he plans to begin work in mid-April with the goal of finishing by May so that the memorial is refreshed in time for local Memorial Day events.
Council members praised the proposal and urged coordination with the Department of Public Works. One councilor recalled previously planted red-and-white shrubbery and cautioned that DPW maintenance practices and sustainability should be considered; DPW staff were cited as willing to advise and provide materials. The council signed O'Neal's Eagle workbook and asked him to notify them of his scheduled workday so members could help.
"I would love that," the mayor said when O'Neal suggested the council might pass in front of the restored memorial at local events. O'Neal said he will recruit Scouts, friends and classmates and planned a GoFundMe to cover material costs.
