Board approves bus‑yard upgrades and chargers as district prepares to add electric buses

The Ventura Unified School District board unanimously approved work to prepare the Jasmine bus yard for electric‑bus chargers and the district’s first wave of electric buses.

Transportation Director Ari explained the district has been awarded grants to replace diesel buses and will initially station four electric buses at the Jasmine site (with space planned for six). Ari said as of 2024 California no longer permits new diesel bus purchases; electric buses cost roughly $500,000 each and the grants pay most of the vehicle and charger cost.

Facilities Director Terry outlined the three‑phase site work—site clearing, repaving and electrical infrastructure upgrades (including transformer relocation) to allow Edison to install chargers. Directors said three chargers will be installed initially; each charger will have two ports so the site will be able to charge multiple buses concurrently. Board members raised concerns about the availability of trained mechanics (most maintenance remains under warranty and out‑of‑district service is sometimes required) and asked staff to evaluate cost options for in‑house mechanic certification versus continuing to rely on roving mechanics.

The board approved the contract for site work and repaving by unanimous vote.

What happens next: Staff will proceed with vendor coordination and electric utility (Edison) work; the district plans professional development and certification opportunities as mechanic training becomes available and grant funding allows for additional chargers/buses.
