After fatal and shooting incidents, Inkster residents urge council to fund community violence-intervention programs

A wave of recent shootings and a reported suicide in Inkster prompted multiple public commenters on April 20 to urge the city to invest in upstream, community-based violence‑intervention strategies.

James Eberhart Jr. told the council that recent tragedies have left residents shaken and said, “This is not a police problem. Police respond to violence. Communities prevent it.” He urged the council to adopt community‑centered solutions, including credible messengers and outreach workers, and said such programs have produced measurable reductions in violence in other cities.

Several other residents and community leaders echoed that call; Leon Crawford described a summer program that attracts hundreds of youth but said far fewer local children participate and asked the council for assistance with outreach and fundraising. AC Williams framed violence as a public‑health issue tied to adverse childhood experiences and recommended family‑focused supports and healthy‑neighborhood policy approaches.

Council members responded by endorsing the need for action and said the city has applied for grants to bring a CVI model to Inkster. Mayor Nolan said staff had applied for two grants and that implementation could begin this summer if funding is approved, and councilmembers proposed organizing a resource fair to better connect families with local programs.

No formal funding vote occurred at the meeting. The council instructed staff to continue seeking grant support and to improve communications about existing programs while working with community partners on short‑term outreach steps and longer‑term program implementation.
