Brooke County Commission approves hires, reimbursements and tables flood-insurance renewal

The County Commission of Brooke County, West Virginia met in adjourned session Nov. 14, 2024, at 10:30 a.m. at the courthouse. Commissioners Stacey Wise and Thomas R. Diserio were present; President Andrew J. Thomas was absent.
Commissioner Stacey Wise moved to approve the minutes from Nov. 7, 2024; Commissioner Thomas R. Diserio seconded and the motion passed unanimously among the commissioners present. The commission then considered routine correspondence and requests.
Tim Cain of TC Auto addressed the commission and asked that all streets and alleys from Center Street to Volunteer Street be reopened; he also expressed concern about the volunteer fire department closing Volunteer Street. The record shows the request was received but no formal action on reopening streets was taken at the meeting.
The commission unanimously approved a letter from Thomas E. Trader to reopen the estate of Franklin D.R. Trader so the appraisement may be amended. The commission tabled consideration of a Wright Flood Insurance renewal to allow further review; the record lists two options: Option A — $13,093.00 and Option B — $13,906.00.
Other routine approvals included final reimbursement to WV Spay Neuter in the amount of $728.65 and acceptance of the final disposition report for 2023 delinquent real estate tickets, submitted by Chief Tax Collector Laurie Eastham.
The commission also approved an email from Prosecuting Attorney Joe Barki recommending two prospective assistant prosecutors: Chris Hood at an annual salary of $78,000 and Gabriella Taverne at $75,000, with an anticipated hire date of Dec. 1, 2024. Both hires were approved pending drug screening, background checks and completion of onboarding processing.
Invoices and vouchers were approved and checks ordered for multiple funds, including the General County Fund (checks 31956–32098 totaling $69,789.20), E-911 Communications (checks 3372–3374 for $78,136.90), and Valuation (checks 2207–2209 for $25,692.69), among others. The commission acknowledged receipt of Hammond Public Service District minutes dated Oct. 17, 2024 and ordered the correspondence filed in the County Clerk’s Office.
Commissioner Wise moved to adjourn; the motion passed unanimously. Thomas R. Diserio signed as pro-tem and Kimberly M. Barbetta, clerk, attested the minutes.
