The Cascade County Commission on Jan. 28 approved Contract 2610, a $52,350 award to Blue Ribbon Electric to remove and replace a failed backup uninterruptible power supply (UPS) at the Cascade County Sheriff’s Office.
Les (speaker 9), representing public works staff, told commissioners the failed UPS provides battery backup power to emergency lighting, computer servers and other critical infrastructure until the facility’s generator transfer switch activates. Public works solicited estimates from local vendors and recommended Blue Ribbon Electric ($52,350) over alternatives from Next Level ($60,850) and Enterprise Electric ($53,950).
A commissioner (speaker 4) asked whether the selected unit included an internet connection and whether county IT had authorized activating network monitoring. Les said IT had not been consulted and that staff planned to buy the internet-capable model because it cost only a few hundred dollars more, but he said the county would not hook up that feature now: "We're just getting it because it was only a couple $100 more so that we have the capabilities for the future if we wanna add it on to keep track of it and monitor it." The commissioner cautioned staff not to enable internet connectivity without IT approval.
A motion to approve the contract was made and carried by voice vote; commissioners recorded no opposition during the meeting.
