Mohave County restores constable salaries to $58,000 for four precincts after board reconsideration

The Mohave County Board of Supervisors voted April 20 to raise annual salaries for constables in four precincts to $58,000 and to keep the North Canyon precinct at $20,000, after suspending rules to reconsider an earlier action.

Supervisor Lehman moved to reconsider and support the higher salary; Director Morning summarized fiscal impacts, saying moving to $58,000 (from $50,000–$55,000 levels previously discussed) increases salary and benefits for a full year and was estimated to have a multi‑thousand-dollar recurring impact. Board members debated fiscal priorities—some cited a structural budget deficit and competing needs for deputies and detention staff; others stressed constables' out-of-pocket equipment costs and public-safety roles.

Constable Teese testified that much of the equipment and vehicle costs come from constables' personal funds, noting he spent more than $1,000 on uniforms and has purchased vehicles and equipment himself. "When I took office in January 2025, the pay was actually $58,000 when I took office and they actually cut it to 50," he said, asking the board to restore the historic level.

After discussion and a voice vote, the board approved the salary action. Staff noted the move increases recurring general-fund costs and asked board members to balance compensation priorities across county public safety needs.
