Dutch Fork Elementary principal credits programs with lower chronic absenteeism

At the April 21 Town of Irmo council meeting, Rebecca Dilly, principal of Dutch Fork Elementary Academy of Environmental Sciences, presented highlights from the school year and credited focused scheduling, community partnerships and student engagement with improved outcomes.
Dilly said the school surpassed goals in both ELA and math, repurposed early-release time for instructional impact, and reduced chronic absenteeism from about 22% to 6.6% (truant students falling from roughly 160 to 37). She also cited an increase in positive office referrals (418) and lower major-discipline referrals (200) as evidence of behavioral and cultural improvements. The school was recognized in 2025 as a nationally certified magnet school by Magnet Schools of America.
Council members praised the progress and encouraged visits to the school; Dilly invited council to attend weekly Friday celebrations to observe student recognition. The presentation was part of the council’s regular school showcase and generated no formal action.
The principal also encouraged community partnerships and mentorships and noted that the school continues to adapt instruction despite nearby road widening and construction.
