Deer Lake Flyers 4‑H Club honored by Beltrami County for holiday turkey donations

The Deer Lake Flyers 4‑H Club of Beltrami County received the Association of Minnesota Counties 4‑H Leadership Award during the county work session. Britain, a club member, told commissioners the group's holiday turkey donation project has donated more than 100 turkeys over the past three years and that visits to the local food shelf have increased about 18% in that time.

"This is our third year donating turkeys," Britain said. "We have learned that visits to the food shelf have increased over 18%. Over the last 3 years, we have been able to donate over 100 turkeys."

County staff and commissioners praised the youth for community service and encouraged them to expand their efforts. Administrator Barry noted that the project was supported by volunteer work, a grant through Thrivent and local fundraising such as selling barnyard cheese. Commissioners thanked club leaders and staff who helped arrange the nomination; Commissioner Sumner and Commissioner Winger were recognized for supporting the award nomination.

Students and leaders said the project provides an early community‑service experience for members and helps them see the need for food assistance locally. County officials suggested the club consider additional service projects and commended the young speakers for their presentation.

The board took no formal action on the recognition beyond the public commendation; commissioners paused for photos at the close of the presentation.
