Superintendent outlines attendance, anti-vape and staffing changes at Superior High School

Haroldson said the freshman Keystone class will receive an anti-vaping presentation on April 27 delivered by a local group providing resources and an anonymous "impact card" exercise for students. He described a recent attendance initiative that moved the allowable tardy threshold closer to the bell and added graduated consequences (lunch detentions, referrals) that he said have cut tardies by roughly 49% since December.
On phones and classroom management, Haroldson said an adjusted phone policy introduced in February reduced congregating in bathrooms and likely helped limit vaping. He said staff will review the policy and may tighten enforcement in the fall.
Haroldson described structural changes planned for next year, including a floor-based leadership model that will relocate assistant principals and deans to offices by grade level to increase visibility and accessibility. He also said the school will reset advisory to deliver more consistent social-emotional learning and executive-function instruction and is setting up a Reset-and-Return (RNR) room to provide dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) skills and avoid unnecessary referrals.
The superintendent announced the reintroduction of a senior mentor program led by veteran teachers Mark Campbell and Jackie Olsen; teachers will propose juniors based on criteria and staff will vet selections.
Haroldson also said some classes will be slightly larger (mid-to-high 20s) to free teacher time for tier 2 interventions, and the administration will audit field trips to ensure curricular alignment and equitable access. He noted work to revise the high school's mission, vision and commitments with staff input and plans to pilot schedule changes via a task force before any major master schedule overhaul.
Board members praised listening and staff engagement. Haroldson said many of these changes are intended to remove low-level distractions so teachers can teach, while he continues work on longer-term schedule and master-schedule considerations for future years.
