Granite County commissioners press Road & Bridge to prioritize repairs, reuse local gravel and manage crews during wet weather

Commissioners told Road & Bridge staff to prioritize emergency repairs after multiple resident letters and field reports described roads that were ‘‘melting’’ and difficult to traverse.

Road & Bridge Superintendent Paul described a recent incident where a wide load struck the white bridge on South Main, removing a post; crews installed a temporary jersey rail. Paul and commissioners also discussed several problem stretches — including Bear Gulch — where recent heavy traffic and wet conditions made the existing surface unsafe. Commissioners instructed staff to stamp and file resident correspondence and to bring a plan for short-term fixes to the next meeting.

A central operational issue was material quality. Commissioners discussed large quantities of previously placed gravel that may not have been mixed into the road base; they repeatedly directed crews to assess and reuse side-pulled material before purchasing new stockpiles. Commissioners said they want per-load approval if new gravel is required and asked supervisors to provide commissioners with estimates before purchases.

Staffing and equipment constraints were also discussed. The county has four blades but only two operators available due to sickness and other absences; the board urged use of overtime and careful scheduling to take advantage of good-weather windows. Commissioners emphasized that compaction (roller) must follow grading and that supervisors should coordinate rentals and clarify daily plans so machines are not idle during suitable conditions.

Why it matters: Citizens reported unsafe roads and called for immediate county action. Commissioners balanced the need to act quickly with concerns about wasting money if new material must later be stripped off. They directed staff to document hours and materials separately to track costs and potential future liability.
