District 128 recognizes state champions across HOSA, debate, Science Olympiad, swim and more

The Community High School District 128 board opened its meeting by recognizing dozens of students and coaches from Libertyville and Vernon Hills for state-level achievements across multiple activities.
At Vernon Hills, HOSA (Health Occupations Students of America) announced growth from 21 to 45 members; 12 students qualified for state and nine attended, with Shagon Punia placing eighth in a family-medicine competition and Ryan (Santoskumar) finishing fifth in sports medicine and being elected Illinois HOSA president for 2026–27.
Libertyville’s debate program was celebrated for its most successful year under coach Sarah Greenwag: multiple novice and JV teams advanced, a novice team won the state novice championship, and Andy Trobe earned all-state recognition and a top-six speaker ranking.
Science Olympiad coaches from both schools reported multiple state medals and strong overall finishes: Libertyville placed sixth overall at state with two first-place event medals (circuit lab and remote sensing — the latter accompanied by a $2,000 Japan-America Society prize), and Vernon Hills finished third overall and set a school record with numerous individual medals across events.
Other recognitions included the district’s unified basketball state champion team, historic swim-and-dive performances highlighted by Yuri Plaxon’s two individual state titles, and the Vernon Hills math team’s top finishes at state.
Board members and administrators congratulated students, coaches and families and invited recipients to take photos with board members; no formal board action was required for the recognitions.
