Parks board approves IU partnership to bring Grand Flume concerts to Switchyard Park

The Bloomington Board of Park Commissioners approved a cooperative partnership with Indiana University to host the Grand Flume concert series at Switchyard Park’s main stage this summer.
Leslie Brinen, recreation division director, described the arrangement: Parks and Recreation will manage site logistics—contracts, fencing, portable restrooms, parking and potential shade structures—with Indiana University reimbursing those expenses. "This is the first year of what we hope will be a multi-year partnership agreement with Indiana University for this concert series," Brinen told the board, adding that IU has guaranteed a financial commitment toward future lawn and stage improvements.
IU representative Ed Kamatali said Grand Flume began in 2018 and has expanded from a parking-lot event into larger venues; he emphasized student and regional-business benefits and said organizers are excited to move into Switchyard Park. The series is planned as three ticketed concerts on June 20, July 18 and Aug. 29.
Board members asked about the partnership term and infrastructure investments; staff described a hopeful multi-year intent with details to be determined as infrastructure planning progresses. A motion to approve the partnership carried unanimously.
Staff said IU will handle performance programming and ticketing while the city will manage permitting, site logistics and capital improvements as specified in the agreement. The Parks Department also said it will coordinate with IU on publicity and return with updates if infrastructure projects (such as shade structures) are advanced.
