Human Rights Commission previews revamped awards website, sets nomination window for spring

The Palm Springs Human Rights Commission displayed a revamped Community Service Awards page and walked through the online nomination form, explaining fields for nominee contact information, a two‑paragraph nomination statement, prior awardees, and attachments.

Commissioners discussed the application period and times for the ad hoc review. The original proposal was May 11–May 22; members proposed extending to a 30‑day window to capture seasonal residents and improve outreach. Options discussed included May 11–June 8 or May 1–May 31; commissioners agreed to coordinate the ad hoc subcommittee review in early June (week of June 1 or week of June 15) and to report back to the full commission at the June meeting.

The communications team prepared a poster and printed materials used at the 1PS picnic; council funding (Council Member Ron de Hart paid an initial printing cost) was acknowledged. Commissioners described the nomination workflow that staff will receive (nominee and nominator contact details, narrative justification, and optional attachments) and affirmed the commission’s intent to publicize the call via Engage Palm Springs.

Next steps: staff will send calendar invitations and confirm a date for the ad hoc review; the commission will finalize the application period and consider sample plaques or mock‑ups at a future meeting. The commission did not adopt a final, binding date during this session but recorded a preference for a 30‑day window and set the ad hoc review to occur before the June meeting.
