Board approves purchase of 470 Chromebooks as technology committee outlines hybrid meeting upgrades

The Berkeley Heights Board of Education reviewed and moved forward with technology upgrades that include a planned purchase of new student Chromebooks and steps to improve hybrid meeting capabilities.

At the technology committee update, members said the district seeks approval to buy 470 HP Foris Chromebooks at a total cost of about $202,000. The devices would carry licensing and a three-year warranty; the committee described vendor repair pickup and a phased deployment that would place devices first with incoming sixth- and ninth-grade students in September.

Committee members said the replacement is motivated in part by older Chromebooks no longer receiving security updates. Technology staff member Jeremy described options for a Zoom Cloud phone replacement to supplant the district’s on-premises phone system, and the committee discussed a 5G backup plan in case Wi‑Fi connectivity fails between buildings. The committee also discussed improving livestreaming and interactive Zoom participation, including a dedicated in-room screen for Zoom.

Board members asked practical questions about keyboard damage, warranty coverage and how older devices would be cycled to younger grades. Technology staff said minor physical damage (single-key loss) can typically be repaired without charge and that the district hopes to institute a family insurance option in the future once a sufficient portion of the fleet is under warranty.
