Sheriff's staff told commissioners that the city of Trussville had stopped accepting inmates from other jurisdictions and that Irondale needed a short-term placement for a few detainees. "We're talking about 3 or 4" inmates being placed temporarily in the county jail, the sheriff's office said, and staff described the arrangement as intended to be a temporary stopgap. Commissioners cautioned that any longer-term precedent of taking inmates from other cities would require additional review and negotiation.
The commission also approved the annual indigent medical care allotment for the jail and accepted a $75,000 grant to support substance-use treatment programs within the facility. Sheriff's staff said the grant paperwork needs execution by Commissioner Stevens.
Staff discussed a capital project to consolidate evidence storage by combining the Bessemer and Birmingham evidence rooms into a single high-security facility with improved software for tracking chain of custody. The sheriff's office said the new evidence facility is intended to address current space and tracking limitations and will include secure storage for items such as firearms and long-term evidence.
Commissioners approved contract changes for the Peregrine law-enforcement system, a laundry-service contract, and a professional-services agreement to provide pre-employment psychological screening for deputy candidates.
What happens next: staff will finalize the temporary inmate agreement terms and execute grant paperwork; the evidence-facility plan will proceed to procurement and contracting steps as approved by the commission.
