The Hendersonville Board of Mayor and Aldermen unanimously adopted Resolution 2026‑08 on March 10 recognizing Josephine “Joe” Skidmore for her years of public service to the city and the county.
The resolution — citing 18 years as a city alderman and 20 years as a county commissioner — was accompanied by an extended public-comment period in which former colleagues, constituents and friends recalled Skidmore’s service, mentorship and commitment to her ward and to Hendersonville. Speakers included Mel Hyde, Arlene Cunningham, a long-time elections worker, and several former and current elected officials, all praising Skidmore’s ‘‘servant’s heart’’ and community focus.
Alderman Skidmore, the honoree’s son, thanked the board and offered personal recollections of his mother’s guidance and toughness. After the tributes, Alderman Sassy moved (and the board approved) an amendment recommending that the city chambers be renamed the Josephine Joe Skidmore Memorial City Chambers; the council added the amendment while noting final naming would follow facilities-committee procedures and any required ordinance.
The board directed that a copy of the resolution be placed in the official minutes and presented to the Skidmore family. The vote to adopt the resolution and the amendment was unanimous.
What happens next: The facilities-naming committee will review the recommendation and, if appropriate, follow the city’s naming procedures to effect a formal renaming.
