Captain Dawn Overly honored at Bexley City Council meeting after promotion

Councilwoman Monique Lampe praised Overly’s career and community work, saying, “When she became a patrol sergeant in 2010, she oversaw the Bexley Citizens Police Academy,” and that Overly has shown “strong leadership, impeccable integrity and dedication to our community.” Lampe recounted Overly’s role teaching self-defense to schoolchildren and coordinating community programs such as the Bexley Citizens Police Academy and the Bexley Safe at Home program.
President Saad said the promotion was “very well deserved” and noted that not every leader needs to be loud to be noticed, calling Overly a “confident, quiet leader.” Lee Nathan, president of the Bexley Citizens Police Academy Alumni Association, credited Overly with helping to launch Heart Safe Bexley and noted the program has trained more than 425 residents in CPR; he also invited the public to a new academy class beginning in September.
Chief Lewis acknowledged the milestone at the meeting and invited council to an upcoming retiree recognition event where officers with 10, 15 and 20 years of service will be honored. The council paused business briefly for a photo opportunity and public congratulations.
The meeting record shows the council celebrated the promotion but did not take formal personnel action during the session; the recognition was ceremonial. The council’s next meeting is scheduled for May 26, when additional agenda items will be considered.
