Jasper City Council approves event permits, contract awards and nuisance abatements; authorizes mayor to negotiate water rights

The Jasper City Council approved a slate of routine items at its meeting, voting unanimously to grant event permits, award contracts for city supplies and concessions, and adopt multiple nuisance-abatement resolutions.
Council members voted to approve permits for community events and school activities, including a Remnant Ministries praise-and-worship event (Basil Nunley), the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life (Amy Browning), a Jasper High School Cross Country 5K series, Lauren’s Legacy fentanyl-awareness walk (Heather Light) and the Jasper High Homecoming Parade. City staff clarified a date for the parade before the permits were approved.
Staff recommended — and council approved — contract awards to W.H. Thomas Oil Company for grease, oil and lubricants; Anders Pool and Spa for pool chemicals; and MC and MC LLC for concessions operations. Jessica, the staff presenter, said the awards went to the lowest responsible bidders after study and evaluation of bids.
The council also adopted resolutions to abate nuisance conditions: several properties received orders for overgrown grass and weeds, one property (9007 Birmingham Avenue) was cited as an unsafe structure, and three properties were cited for accumulation of debris. Adam Bolton’s request to waive a $500 signed-permit fee for the He-Man Drummond Center of Innovation was granted.
In separate action, council members unanimously authorized Mayor Josh Gates to enter formal negotiations with Curry Water Authority to develop a contract related to purchasing water rights. The council also introduced a budget amendment and an engineering design request tied to an Industrial Drive resurfacing project; council introduced the items for future consideration and did not take final action at the meeting.
