The Iredell County Board of Commissioners voted May 5 to rezone roughly 18 acres along Weeping/Weeping Cherry Lane after the City of Statesville released the parcel from its extraterritorial jurisdiction.
County planning staff explained the property was previously split between the city's ETJ and county jurisdiction; Statesville recently released the in‑city portion, and the final step was assigning county zoning to the whole parcel. A county planning staff member identified as Mr. Todd told the board the Planning Board unanimously recommended rezoning the released portion to RA (rural/agricultural) and said the family intends to subdivide the parcel for a family subdivision.
The board opened a public hearing and, finding no speakers, closed it. Commissioner Stout moved to approve the zoning map amendment and associated 2045 Horizon Plan amendments, saying the change is "consistent with the adopted 2045 horizon plan" and reasonable in the public interest because the parcel lies within an existing residential area. The motion passed on a voice vote; no roll-call tally was recorded in the meeting record.
The action assigns county RA zoning to the portion of the parcel released by Statesville and removes the ambiguity left by partial ETJ coverage. There were no recorded public objections at either the Planning Board hearing or the May 5 meeting.
What happens next: the zoning assignment takes effect according to county procedures for map amendments; any future subdivision or development proposals will be reviewed under county zoning and subdivision rules.
