At the March 10 board meeting Snow School third-grade teachers Aaliyah Orchet and Jill Gity demonstrated classroom social-emotional learning practices used under the district’s Choose Love/SEAL initiative. They described morning check-ins with a mood meter, daily journals and breathing strategies they call ‘brave breaths’ to help students regulate emotions and stay engaged in class.
Teachers showed student-created hearts noting self-appreciation and played a brief student demonstration of a calming breath exercise. School leaders told the board the school’s SEL-aligned approach has coincided with a decline in chronic absenteeism to below 10%.
Why it matters
District leaders and classroom educators pointed to SEAL (social-emotional and academic learning) as a mechanism that supports classroom behavior, attendance and academic engagement. Presenters said SEL practices also inform behavior-intervention plans and support teachers during high-stress episodes.
Quote
"When our students feel safe in school, which Choose Love promotes, they come to school," a presenter said, noting attendance improvements at Snow School.
Next steps
Snow School staff invited the board to a continuing showcase of student work and the district said it will share additional data on intervention outcomes at committee meetings.
