Plan Commission clears Riverwalk sculpture and park improvements

The Plan Commission on May 5 approved Conditional Use 26‑004 and the associated site plan (26‑0010) to install a sculpture and park amenities at the Riverwalk kayak launch. Staff described a flood analysis showing the proposed improvements — seating stones, a 5‑ft concrete paver walkway, landscape beds, site lighting and security cameras — would not impact the floodplain.
Project representatives explained the sculpture is a cast‑bronze piece on a natural stone pedestal; the selected artist holds a Guggenheim fellowship and has participated in the Whitney Biennial. The project had previously received unanimous support from the Park Commission. Staff recommended approval with listed conditions and the Plan Commission approved the conditional use and site plan by voice vote.
The approval includes standard site plan conditions and required coordination on exhibits; the project team indicated the pedestal material was changed to natural stone and that landscaping and lighting will be installed as shown. The city will monitor required permits and any conditions tied to floodplain management and site work.
