The Grand Island Parks and Recreation Advisory Board agreed to move forward with preliminary study and stakeholder coordination for a proposed small, low-impact kayak launch on the East River.
Pete and staff described a compact launch design (an easy, low-impact dock rather than a large permanent state launch) intended to minimize shoreline disturbance and simplify take-in/take-out operations. Committee members emphasized limited parking at the proposed site across the road and the need to resolve parking logistics before permitting.
The group agreed to present the proposal to the Local Waterfront Revitalization (LWR) reviewers and to anticipate New York State Department of Environmental Conservation and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers reviews as part of the permitting sequence. Members also discussed consistency language for the Greenway and the town's waterfront plan to ease the review process.
Committee members said they have a sketch plan and contact information for recommended kayak types and would return with a more developed plan following the LWR meeting and the town's review process.
