The Wausau Fire Department's 2025 annual report and an updated Insurance Services Office (ISO) rating were presented to the Public Health and Safety Committee on March 23. The fire chief said the city was informed on Friday that it has been assigned ISO Class 2 status for the coming four years.
The chief said the department handled roughly 7,200 calls in 2025, averaging about 20 calls per day, and described the workload as a record-setting year. "It's setting a new record every year essentially," a committee member said; the chief said the ISO class 2 rating was the only item not included in the printed report and that achieving class 1 remains a departmental goal.
Committee members discussed public outreach ahead of an April 7 referendum related to fire staffing and encouraged residents to read the posted annual report. Staff listed three public listening sessions scheduled for March 31, April 1 and April 3 at different locations and times, and said the city produced a podcast and other outreach materials about the department's services.
The committee placed the fire report on file and encouraged residents who cannot attend sessions to contact alder members or the fire chief directly for information.
