Council OKs parking and access agreement to create 250-space public lot serving Newport Landing area

La Porte City Council voted May 4 to approve a parking and access agreement that will create roughly 250 public parking spaces in the Newport Landing area to serve new attractions and trail connections.
Bert Cook, executive director of the La Porte Economic Advancement Partnership, told the council the agreement memorializes public access for parking spaces within a lot being built as part of the Pinfusion development adjacent to the Kroger complex. "There'll be about 250 parking spaces that will serve as overflow parking for all of those different things that attract people to that area," Cook said, listing the Dunes Volleyball Center, Pinfusion, Clear Lake Trail and other nearby venues.
The agreement has already been approved by the redevelopment commission and will proceed to the Board of Public Works for further consideration, Cook said. Council members asked whether the agreement could pass tonight; staff confirmed it could, and the council moved, seconded and approved the measure.
Council and staff said the parking is intended to support multiple nearby venues and to improve visitor access without requiring the city to fund the construction, which is tied to private development and redevelopment planning.
