Members confirmed the Vietnam War Veterans Remembrance Day on March 29 at the veterans walk, correcting prior advertising and setting the ceremony time for 2 p.m. The commission also reviewed Armed Forces Day on May 16 (11 a.m.), Memorial Day activities on May 25 at 11 a.m. (assigned to the VFW) and an additional Memorial Gardens service on May 24 at 2 p.m. The commission listed other annual observances including POW/MIA Day (Sept. 18), Veterans Day (Nov. 11 at 11 a.m.) and Pearl Harbor Remembrance (Dec. 6 at 1 p.m.).
Commissioners discussed the countywide "Run for the Wall" motorcycle route scheduled for May 18, which can bring several hundred motorcyclists and sometimes overlaps with commission meetings; members said they may adjust meeting timing when necessary.
A planned visit by AmVets One—a 45-foot mobile unit staffed with counselors and resource vendors—was tentatively set for May 15 at the commission center. The chair said the unit will offer discreet counseling, bring displays and vendors, and the commission plans to host a small resource fair with VA and local providers on the day of the visit.
The commission asked members to coordinate with National Guard and active-duty contacts to secure ceremonial support for ceremonies and to provide details to city communications and local media once arrangements are finalized.
