Newport‑Mesa Unified and poet laureate outline spring arts shows, workshops and sidewalk poetry projects

Representatives from Newport‑Mesa Unified School District and Costa Mesa’s poet laureate briefed the Arts Commission on a slate of spring and summer arts offerings on April 2.
Miss Fairbanks (Newport‑Mesa Unified School District) said the district will combine its senior and district art shows at the OC Doyle Pavilion, with an awards ceremony April 15 and an exhibition April 14–17. She described expanded dance collaborations between Davis Magnet School and Costa Mesa High School, new elementary orchestra pilots supported by the Save the Music Foundation at Kellybrook Elementary, an instrument‑fitting fair scheduled for May 9 at Davis Magnet School, and upgraded sound and lighting systems in elementary MPRs.
Poet Laureate Danielle Hansen read a short poem and outlined year‑two programming: a Springfest community ode project, a book launch April 24, in‑person workshops (including a senior‑center workshop and a teen workshop), an online fall workshop, and a sidewalk poetry project already underway at Brentwood Park with additional parks planned. Hansen also said she will moderate a public panel at UC Irvine April 27 on the role of government in supporting the arts.
Commissioners welcomed the district updates and the poet laureate’s community projects and urged continued partnership between the schools, city and arts organizations.
The commission received the presentations; no formal action was required.
