Public Affairs Committee accepts Railroad Days final report after storm evacuation, extra bus costs

The West Chicago Public Affairs Committee accepted the final report on Railroad Days at its Aug. 18 meeting after staff summarized operations, costs and a few incidents.

Dave, a staff member responsible for the event, told the committee the weekend went well overall but noted several operational items: a brief lightning-related evacuation on Thursday, a stolen car that had been dumped on Fabyan Parkway, and a $40,000 expenditure on buses that were contracted but ultimately not used because parking became available. He told the committee that, despite those challenges, “we, again, had no real issues” and that attendance included lively performances and a fireworks show.

Committee members discussed whether to relocate or change the event footprint in future years; options raised included Kress Creek Farms, Reed-Keppler Park and Pioneer Park, but members and staff said each potential site carries trade-offs for emergency access, footprint and cost. Reed-Keppler has been used in the past but required a $10,000 field restoration after prior use; Kress Creek Farms was described as attractive but raised concerns about ambulance access.

A motion to accept the Railroad Days final report was made and the committee approved it by voice vote. Alderman Julieta Alcántar-García indicated she made the motion. Staff will retain the report and the committee may revisit location or budgeting questions in future work sessions.

Next steps: staff will keep a record of the report and bring any cost or site-change proposals back to the committee for formal consideration.
