SunLine outlines 10-year 'Rides Reimagined' plan, seeks public input and commission support

Ana Dan, Assistant Transit Planner at SunLine, presented the agency’s 'Rides Reimagined' network-redesign initiative on Jan. 20, describing a multi-year effort to update routes, services and microtransit in the Coachella Valley. “We served about 3 million passengers” in the last fiscal year, Dan said, and SunLine is conducting a community engagement process and a ridership-data review to inform proposed scenario maps and phased changes over the next 10 years.
Dan said the project will identify short-term improvements staff could implement in year one, while also developing longer-term scenarios constrained by operator and financial resources. She emphasized transit’s role in reducing vehicle miles traveled and noted SunRide microtransit and fixed-route linkages as tools to boost access.
Commissioners asked whether the study includes direct connections to CV Link, whether bus stops have shade, and how seniors would access real-time arrival information. Dan said direct CV Link connections are not an explicit focus of the current project but could be explored with the consultant and broader stakeholder input; shelter provision is driven by stop-level ridership and operational decisions; SunLine uses a Transit App that provides live bus tracking and offers travel-training for seniors to learn how to use the system.
Dan asked commissioners to promote the public survey (open through the end of February) and offered paper copies. She noted that Palm Springs currently has the highest participation rate among the city jurisdictions in the survey and that the consultant will use the collected data to develop network scenarios for additional rounds of public input.
No commission action was taken. Commissioners supported outreach to senior groups for travel-training and suggested SunLine consider shade and shelter prioritization at high-senior stops as an operational input to the redesign.
