Board approves strategic plan, adopts 'accountability' value and launches volunteer 'Shine Squad'

The Midland Public Schools Board of Education voted March 16 to approve the district's strategic plan and companion graduate profile after extended discussion of value statements and community input. The approved plan replaces the value term 'trust' with 'accountability' as a more actionable priority, administrators said.
"We had well over 3,000 individual responses to that plan that inform this plan and the outcome," the presenter said during the update on the strategic plan. The motion to approve the plan was offered by Horowitz and supported by Vice President McFarland, and the board approved the item by voice vote.
Board members said the plan will guide programmatic decisions and that implementation will include regular reporting. Penny Miller Nelson said the district will start infusing the graduate profile language into district documents and will officially launch the profile in the fall.
As part of the district's effort to increase community engagement, Penny announced a relaunch of the volunteer program branded as the 'Shine Squad' — Support, Help, Inspire, Nurture and Engage — which will allow community volunteers to help in classrooms, at lunch or on playgrounds. "If you have any desire in heart to be in our schools working with students, we'll have a spot for you," she said.
Next steps: the district will begin integrating the graduate profile into planning documents and will open volunteer registration online.
