Board asks Oakland Schools to place 1.5‑mill regional enhancement millage on August ballot

The South Lyon Community Schools Board of Education voted 7–0 on March 10 to request that Oakland Schools (the intermediate school district) place a regional enhancement millage on the August 4, 2026 ballot.
Administration read a resolution based on Section 705 of the Revised School Code (MCL 380.75) asking the ISD to submit a proposal for 1.5 mills for six years (2026–2031). Trustees emphasized that adopting the resolution is a request to place the question before voters and is not an endorsement of the millage by the board.
During discussion trustees asked how the dollars would flow and whether South Lyon would be a net recipient. Administration said, based on current numbers, the district would generate roughly $5.6 million and would receive about $6.0 million — a projected net benefit of around $400,000 in year one under current estimates.
Board members also reviewed the difference between a bond and a millage: bonds fund capital projects while a regional enhancement millage would provide operating revenue that constituent districts could use for staffing, programs and classroom needs if approved by voters across the ISD. The resolution directs the superintendent to deliver a certified copy to the Oakland Schools board and notes that Oakland Schools will submit the question only if constituent districts representing a majority of ISD students request it by March 31, 2026.
The motion to approve the resolution was moved, seconded and approved by roll call with every trustee voting yes. The board took no further action to levy taxes; the vote only requests the ISD place the question before electors.
