Public commenters urge Leander ISD to push student allotment hike, preserve specials and the Fabian name

A series of public commenters at the Leander ISD board meeting urged trustees to press state officials for funding changes and to preserve neighborhood and programmatic supports as the district restructures campuses.

An unnamed speaker asked the community to write to the governor, lieutenant governor and state legislators asking that student allotment (the state's per-pupil funding amount) be placed on the 2027 legislative agenda. The commenter noted that inflation has affected costs since the last allotment increase in 2019 and encouraged a bipartisan approach in advocacy.

Another public commenter urged the board to reconsider proposed budget amendments that could remove specialist programs from campuses that fall just below enrollment thresholds. The speaker asked the district to count pre-K enrollment toward campus totals to help retain access to performing and fine-arts specialists and warned that losing specialists would increase teacher workloads and risk losing talented educators.

Ruth Heisle, a longtime resident and alumna, said she strongly supports preserving the Fabian name on the current school building because it "reflects a significant part of the community's history" and that changing it "would risk erasing an important link from the past to the present." Christy Diver, also a Fabian alum and legacy committee member, urged the board to keep the Fabian name in Cedar Park and suggested finding a way to retain the name when properties are repurposed.

James Dean, another commenter, thanked trustees for their service, encouraged support for teacher pay increases, reminded attendees of upcoming elections and offered encouragement to trans and queer students and families in the audience.

The board heard six public comments in total and then proceeded to closed session business.
