Donnie Crawford appointed at-large member of the D.C. Council by unanimous vote

Donnie Crawford was unanimously appointed as an at-large member of the Council of the District of Columbia on January 20, 2026, filling the seat vacated January 5.
Chair Phil Mendelson introduced the resolution, noting Crawford’s experience as director of the Committee on Business and Economic Development and prior work at the DC Fiscal Policy Institute. Mendelson told members that roughly 42 people applied for the vacancy and that Crawford had broad support among colleagues.
Council Member Lewis George praised Crawford’s record on council matters and called her “knowledgeable about the council,” saying her experience will be “an asset as we go into performance oversight and… the budget.” Council Member Parker described the selection as “measured and sensible” and said Crawford will “help us meet the many challenges facing the district.” Council Member Pinto and others emphasized Crawford’s readiness to “hit the ground running.”
After discussion, a roll-call vote was held. The secretary recorded 12 yes votes and the resolution was approved unanimously. Chair Mendelson said the swearing-in is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. in the council chambers.
The appointment is interim and will continue until the certification of the results of the special election. The Council also moved to place committee memberships and other administrative matters related to the change on today’s agenda so the new member can be assigned to relevant committees and begin participating immediately.
