ST. PAUL — The committee considered House File 4372, which would extend the allowable project period for meat‑processing training and retention grants created in 2023.
Representative Vang said the program helps train and retain workers for local and regional meat processors and asked for additional time to complete projects. Tory, government relations director for the Minnesota Farmers Union, and other supporters described the program as addressing a workforce shortage and said the grants are working to connect trainees with processors.
Ashley Brossard, assistant director in the Department of Agriculture’s Egg Marketing and Development Division, told the committee the department has encumbered about $537,000 of the appropriation and expended roughly $60,000; the remaining funds are obligated to grantees but not yet spent because the grants are reimbursement‑based. Committee members asked whether a one‑year extension would be sufficient; supporters said additional time helps grantees finish projects and draw down reimbursements.
Representative Vang renewed her motion to refer HF 4372 to Ways & Means; the committee approved the referral.
