Lawrence City parks staff report winter facility upgrades, announce spring events

Lawrence City parks staff told the board they completed a string of winter maintenance projects and outlined several upcoming community events.
Eric, the parks staff lead, said crews repainted the interior at Gen Park, installed new lighting, and finished restroom renovations at Leo Park and Burns Park, with Explorer Park work underway. "They've also finished the restrooms at Leo Park, Burns Park, and now they're at Explorer Park," Eric said, adding that Community Park will receive new fixtures and partitions later this year.
Board members asked about access and locking procedures for park restrooms. Eric said some restrooms remain locked and must be unlocked by staff, while others (including Explorer Park) are unlocked for public use. He also reported a basement moisture issue at headquarters: staff installed a new sump pump and deployed dehumidifiers and exhaust fans to dry the space after about an inch or two of water was found.
Jamie, who handles community events, announced Spring Fest on March 28 at Lawrence Community Park with the Benjamin Harrison YMCA. "We'll do a sensory friendly hunt beginning at 9:15," Jamie said, and said general egg hunts will begin at 10 a.m.; registration is open on the Visit Lawrence, Indiana events page and on the city's social media channels.
Staff also briefed the board on film nights and a trailer-walk collaboration tied to the Hartland festival: a family-friendly film is scheduled for May 29, a date-night film for Aug. 28 and a trailer walk on Sept. 23. Jamie said the Sept. 23 event is planned to coordinate with Hartland’s trailer-watch activities and that the city will partner with festival organizers to host the trailer walk at the cultural campus.
Board members thanked city crews for the winter work and asked staff to follow up on a storage-door security issue observed near the batting cages. With those follow-ups noted, the board moved on to other agenda items.
