Aberdeen — During public comment at the May 27 Aberdeen Town Board meeting a resident urged expansion of a downtown "hometown heroes" banner program and described locating a wartime photograph of former Mayor Bobby Paige to use on a banner.
The resident, who spoke during the public-comment period, said the town began with five banners and that organizers plan to rotate additional honorees. She described contacting two daughters of the late Bobby Paige and receiving a wartime group photograph that allowed organizers to extract an image of him in uniform for display; she noted the banner in place currently shows a later civilian portrait and that organizers may update it.
Speakers also asked the community for help locating a photograph of an Aberdeen police officer killed in the line of duty in the 1920s (the officer is interred in Bethesda Cemetery). The American Legion was acknowledged for bringing the banner initiative to the town's attention. Commenters emphasized that nominated honorees need not be military veterans and could include police officers, firefighters or other hometown heroes.
What’s next: Organizers said they will continue rotating banners and welcome nominations; the board did not take formal action during the public-comment period.
