The Newburyport City School Committee voted on March 11 to appoint Erin Fen and Stephanie (Steph) Kina as the city's representatives to the Whittier Regional School Committee.
Erin Fen introduced herself as a Newburyport resident and a special-education teacher since 2005, said she has two daughters in town schools and expressed interest in learning more about the regional lottery, representation and the regional agreement process. "I would like to represent Newburyport," Fen said during her remarks.
Stephanie Kina said she is an actuary and manages a team of data scientists, described her risk-management and finance experience, and said she is motivated to volunteer in the district. "I have a lot of experience in budgeting, in finance, and in risk," Kina said.
With two candidates for two vacancies, a motion to appoint both Fen and Kina was moved, seconded and approved; committee members recorded their votes by voice (the vice chair recorded an "I"). The superintendent said staff will connect the new appointees to Whittier leadership and the upcoming Whittier committee schedule.
What happens next: Staff will email the appointees and connect them with the Whittier superintendent and the appropriate Whittier committees; the new representatives are expected to begin attending meetings immediately.
