Members also discussed a legislative-priority breakfast scheduled May 8 to hear from local legislators. Committee members noted several bills of interest, including a proposal cited as 7245 addressing special-education cost relief and H781 addressing full state funding for regional transportation reimbursement; Superintendent Riley referenced a blue-ribbon report and a potential $30 million phased proposal to update the state school-funding formula. A member raised concern about federal Title I cuts affecting English-language learners and asked whether the committee should add that to the priority list; staff said Rhode Island maintains some separate funding buckets but agreed to consider the question.
Finally, the committee appointed two members to a district working group (one from Bristol and one from Warren) — Miss Piper and Miss Richards — and set the group's first meeting for May 27 at Warren Town Hall, with a report back to the committee after that meeting.
