Byram Hills honors graduating science-research seniors at May meeting

Byram Hills Central School District students were honored May 5 for research that earned regional and national recognition, as the board used its monthly meeting to spotlight graduating seniors from the district's authentic science research program.
"This program's success is a direct reflection of your leadership," Board President Lara Stangle said as she praised students and mentors for sustained commitment and mentorship. Stangle and district staff introduced each student and noted awards including Tri-County Science and Tech Fair placements and national finalists in specialized competitions.
Student presenters described a range of projects. Gavin Bunting spoke about an "AI-based framework for automated recordings of robotic-assisted surgical procedures." Other highlighted topics included environmental monitoring, neuroscience research, and engineering solutions. The board acknowledged multiple student winners at regional fairs, Regeneron scholars and national finalists in discipline-specific contests.
Student body treasurer Sophie Kai, representing the student board, summarized recent student activities and events and said the research program has created "shared experiences" students will remember as they graduate.
The board also recognized mentors and district staff who support the program and invited parents and teachers to stand in appreciation. The acknowledgement concluded with a group photograph and informal congratulations before the meeting moved on to budget business.
