Board approves routine items; committee reports highlight Legion Stadium study and community partnerships

The New Hanover County Board of Education approved routine consent items and several personnel actions during its March 10 meeting while hearing reports on facilities, budgets and community partnerships.
In committee reports, board members said the county plans a Legion Stadium concept and cost study estimated at about $66,000. Board members said New Hanover County Schools would contribute roughly one‑third (about $22,000) toward the study; the project discussion included potential demolition and rebuild of the fieldhouse, Buck Hardy field improvements, removal of a fire tower and future stakeholder sessions planned for July.
"It's $66,000 for the study. We're paying a third of it," a committee member said during the facilities report, and board members asked when the district's share would come to the board for a budget approval. Staff said contract details and timing would be provided when finalized.
The meeting also included recognition of community partners. Alicia Marorrow, regional program manager for Samaritan's Feet International, and Dave Stoddell, education manager for the Carolina Panthers, described a shoe‑donation event that distributed more than 800 pairs of sneakers to students at two elementary schools and tied into the Panthers' Third & Goal literacy initiative.
Board members approved multiple motions by voice vote throughout the meeting. The board amended and approved the agenda, approved minutes and accepted committee reports by voice votes noted in the record. The board also voted to apply to send a representative to a North Carolina School Boards Association legislative‑agenda committee; members agreed to select a designee at agenda review on March 24.
On personnel and other business, the board went into closed session under North Carolina General Statute provisions cited in the meeting (discussion of confidential student records, attorney‑client privilege and personnel matters) and subsequently approved the personnel agenda by voice vote.
The board announced upcoming budget work sessions, committee meetings and the April 1 regular meeting. The meeting adjourned after a final voice vote recorded as six to one.
The Legion Stadium study and other facility items will return to the board as staff and the county finalize contract and budget details.
