Cabell County Schools reports summer camps, driver's ed and immersion camps are filling fast

Watts said high-school driver's education opened for registration (138 signed up as of her report; the district currently has capacity for 60) and that the district plans to sustain driver's ed into the school year pending certification and staffing. She described a new leadership camp for rising eighth graders (25 slots from each participating middle school) scheduled for July 8–9, and middle-school career-technical education (CTE) camps that historically sell out.
Watts gave enrollment figures for orientation and transition camps ("climb" camps) for incoming sixth and ninth graders—139 sixth-graders and 83 ninth-graders had registered at the time of the report—and said the Japanese immersion camp sponsored by Toyota had 196 registrants and was closed. She also noted the district's Extended School Year (ESY) services and the state-required third-grade success program would run during summer school and that bus pickup points and routes will be published before programs begin.
Board members asked clarifying questions about transportation and whether camps would provide district bus service; Watts said the district provides buses for most camps with some exceptions (e.g., certain CTE programs require parent drop-off) and that staff would provide routing details at the next meeting.
