The Warr Acres City Council voted Jan. 20 to buy a new Peterson 30-cubic-yard grappling truck and approved a separate authorization for the mayor to purchase a 36-inch wide-format scanner to digitize building plans.
Public works director Mike Turman told the council the grappling truck, budgeted in the city's CIP, will replace an aging 2007 truck that requires a Class A driver and presents operational challenges. The new truck is a Class B vehicle that is easier to operate and would increase scheduling flexibility; its price was presented as $228,991.91. Councilors discussed financing versus outright purchase. Staff noted $300,000 had been budgeted in the CIP for fleet replacements and suggested selling older equipment later to recoup costs. After debate the council approved an outright purchase of the grappling truck by recorded vote.
Separately, staff reviewed proposals for a wide-format scanner/printer to convert decades of paper plans into digital files required by the city charter. After comparing Canon and HP models and warranty/service options, the council authorized the mayor to purchase a scanner for up to $10,000 (staff cited a discounted price of $9,886 under a government program). Supporters said digitization will reduce off-site storage costs and improve access to plans.
Both votes were approved during the meeting; the grappling truck purchase was recorded as an outright purchase and the scanner authorization allowed the mayor to finalize the buy within the approved threshold.
