The Battle Creek City Commission on Jan. 20 approved Resolution 304, authorizing the city manager to sign contract 25-5598 with the Michigan Department of Transportation for a gateway sign and lighting project on Capitol Avenue.
A commissioner who pulled the item noted insufficient lighting on a rebuilt bridge at the I-94 gateway and asked staff whether the contract covered streetlights or only the decorative logo. City staff told the commission that the proposed improvements are intended to "close the gaps and the shadows" and improve visibility across the gateway area but confirmed that decorative elements the city requested will be paid for by the city. The staff member said some street-lighting scope may be included in additions to the existing contract and offered to check details.
Commissioners expressed support for improved lighting; the resolution moved, seconded and was approved during the meeting. Staff did not provide a detailed funding breakdown in the public discussion; commissioners discussed prior bridge reconstruction and that lighting was not part of that project.
The contract authorizes work with MDOT; subsequent project design, procurement and installation will follow contract terms and any required city budgeting steps.
