The Petersburg City Public School Board approved multiple routine action items and proclamations during its May 6 meeting.
Superintendent Miss Brown recommended approval of the personnel agenda for May 6, 2026 (item #22 removed). The motion was moved by Mr. Miles and seconded by Miss Proctor; one member voiced opposition and the motion carried.
On action items, the board approved the school nutrition and food service management annual contract renewal (second year with the vendor), the 2027 special education annual plan (federal IDEA 611 and preschool handicap allocations), and the 2027 Federal Perkins Career and Technical Education application. Each item had a motion, a second and carried after a voice vote; several votes were recorded with a single opposing voice in the public record.
The board also approved a slate of proclamations: National Teacher Appreciation Week (May 4–8, 2026), Mental Health Awareness Month (May 2026), Month of the Military Child (May 2026) and Nurses Appreciation Week (May 6–12, 2026).
Superintendent remarks and the superintendent's report highlighted recent events (a STEAM Expo, recognition of Petersburg High School's state championship basketball team, a Special Olympics meet), newly installed perimeter fencing at several campuses funded by a Virginia Department of Education security grant, and staff plans to bring a May 20 action item regarding extension of a one-time $1,500 SOQ bonus to additional eligible employees pending state funds.
What happens next: Approved contracts and federal applications proceed under the superintendent's implementation; the board will take a vote on bonus extension at the May 20 meeting as staff finalize funding details.
