Weston adjusts Summer Curriculum Academy schedule and plans audit of student tech use
Summary
District staff said the Summer Curriculum Academy will be shortened and shifted because of snow days and a late school year; the district also announced it will add student-use metrics to its annual instructional-software audit to clarify how and how much students use screens across grade bands.
District curriculum staff updated the subcommittee on two operational items.
Summer Curriculum Academy: staff said the usual five-day Summer Curriculum Academy—which drew 84 teachers last year across K–12—was modified because of spring snow days and a late school year. Some teams worked during April break and remaining Academy work will use the last days of June; staff said fuller data will be presented at the Academic Year in Review meeting in June.
Instructional-technology audit: staff announced the annual audit of instructional software will be expanded to include student-use metrics (time and purpose) in addition to teacher use. Dan DeVitto, the district’s director of IT (named in the presentation), will work with curriculum staff to analyze software usage, redundancy, alignment to curriculum, and student engagement so the district can report precisely "what is actually happening in Weston" and decide whether changes are needed. Board members asked for grade-level delineation of tech use; staff said K–2, 3–5 and 6–12 bands will likely drive the analysis and that smaller-group parent conversations are already underway to address community concerns about screen time.
Next steps: staff will return with audit findings that distinguish types of screen use, report recommendations, and schedule a dedicated subcommittee conversation to review data and policy implications.
