Summary

The board moved on a package of policies related to the state-required comprehensive equity plan and voted to treat the policy packages as first reads, scheduling second reads for the May 15 meeting so the district can meet the New Jersey Department of Education deadline (June 23) for the equity plan.
Trustees and counsel discussed process complications after the board abolished policy 131 earlier in the year. Several members said re-adopting a version of 131 would ease routine policy submissions; others said the immediate imperative was to get equity-plan policies on the record so the district can submit its plan to the state.
"We need a way to put these policies forward before the state deadline," the board attorney said, and the board voted to introduce two attachments of policies (AB and AC) as first-read items and to consider final votes at the May 15 meeting. The packages include policies on spectator code of conduct for interscholastic events, harassment/intimidation/bullying options, academic integrity, bilingual education regulation updates, and site-selection regulations among others.
Several trustees requested that the missing policy 131 be put on the May agenda for committee review and potential re-adoption so the board would have a stable bylaw for future policy procedure. The administration agreed to provide revised drafts and to work with legal counsel to make sure the June submission will include finalized policy texts.
